Hands-on, fast-paced, and built for how your son actually learns. Here's what his days look like.
Day schedules
All elements of the day are subject to reordering every day to keep things fresh and alive for the students. Here's the outline of what a student does in class each day.
Physical activity
Exercise, a group game, a competition, and more.
Project work
The majority of the time. Students work in groups of various sizes completing projects that have been laid out. Teachers act as mentors and guides, letting students work through problems, come up with ideas, and put the pieces together.
Book reading
Space every day for students to read in class — enough to cover one book a quarter. Students read independently or out loud depending on the day's chapters.
Parent-created curriculum
The most consistently independent time of the day. Students work on laptops or tablets to complete their modules. (This and reading time let teachers hold one-on-one check-ins with students.)
Grouped into two-day bootcamps, we cover all of our math theory across 16 total days throughout the school year. These days run like circuits or intervals to keep a fast-paced, exciting environment. All intervals are 15–30 minutes.
Math lecture
One to three simultaneous lectures so every level grabs the concepts. Taught through a practical lens, drawing on different countries' styles, with heavy interaction.
Independent example
Problems based on the lecture.
Group problem solving
Posing problems outside their current experience so students of different ages figure out how to apply the new theory together.
Exercise challenges
Group challenges and competition — not related to math at all.
Heavily flexible days shaped by the relationship the student group and the business work out together. We push for an open-curtain relationship, letting students see everything from the end result (an entry-level position) all the way up to high-level work on the business — not just business-level tasks.
As students develop, we begin the phase of building up their own business. This is discussed closely with our staff and your family to set them up for success.
Our new model
Students go through the majority of their content via projects. Projects synthesize skills from a variety of subjects — math, physics, chemistry, economics, literature, art, history, and more — and let students develop team skills while working on concepts that pique their interest.
Parents bring material that reflects what they believe their son should learn. These materials are turned into digestible modules, so you, as the parent, have a direct say in what your son is learning.
Intensive two-day math bootcamps include lectures, problems, and physical fitness, with two bootcamps per quarter.
We value the profound impact of reading and teach our students to love it. The books are hand-picked by the Forge staff and the parents.
A multi-year plan to take students from learning and participating in businesses to starting and running their own. Your son will partner with local businesses to shadow, learn, and grow.
Grading
Our main priority is to complement effort — proper effort yields good results — so we look first at the student's input. Each project is graded on a three-tier system.
How well the student put in proper, focused effort.
The quality of what they produced — results rewarded as a byproduct.
An honest conversation about how well the student understands himself.
